{"id":2333,"date":"2026-03-24T10:46:48","date_gmt":"2026-03-24T10:46:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jpit.uk\/?p=25856"},"modified":"2026-03-24T10:46:48","modified_gmt":"2026-03-24T10:46:48","slug":"should-we-still-stop-rosebank","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/standrewsurcrustington.org.uk\/?p=2333","title":{"rendered":"Should we still stop Rosebank?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>With an escalating global oil crisis, is it out of touch for&nbsp;churches to&nbsp;continue&nbsp;supporting&nbsp;the campaign to stop the Rosebank oil field? Absolutely not.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">ICYMI*:&nbsp;What\u2019s&nbsp;going on?&nbsp;<\/h2>\n<p>The Strait of Hormuz \u2013 between the&nbsp;countries&nbsp;of&nbsp;Oman,&nbsp;UAE&nbsp;and Iran&nbsp;\u2013 is currently being&nbsp;partially blockaded&nbsp;by Iran,&nbsp;as they protest&nbsp;illegal&nbsp;American and Israeli attacks&nbsp;which began on&nbsp;28<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;February.&nbsp;This matters because a fifth of the world\u2019s oil&nbsp;is&nbsp;usually&nbsp;transported through the Strait.&nbsp;On 19<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;March,&nbsp;leaders from the G7 and other nations (including the UK)&nbsp;issued a&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/gov.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">joint statement<\/a>&nbsp;condemning&nbsp;Iran\u2019s blockade of the Gulf and<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>highlighting the global impact.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile,&nbsp;JPIT continues&nbsp;to support&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.stopcambo.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Stop Rosebank<\/a>, the campaign to&nbsp;prevent&nbsp;the development of an oil field off the Shetland coast.&nbsp;The UK Government will be deciding whether to approve or deny this project&nbsp;in late spring&nbsp;2026.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Critics are pouncing&nbsp;on&nbsp;the&nbsp;seeming contradiction between&nbsp;these two political moments. But can we&nbsp;respond to&nbsp;the&nbsp;energy&nbsp;crisis&nbsp;and&nbsp;stop fossil fuel expansion?&nbsp;And&nbsp;how should the Church be involved?&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The energy security argument&nbsp;<\/h2>\n<p>Some are&nbsp;exploiting the argument of&nbsp;\u201cenergy&nbsp;security\u201d&nbsp;in&nbsp;this moment of global disruption,&nbsp;as&nbsp;a&nbsp;reason to slow down&nbsp;climate policy, and go ahead with Rosebank.&nbsp;Jim Ratcliffe\u2019s&nbsp;blog for&nbsp;his company\u2019s website, \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ineos.com\/news\/ineos-group\/energy-security-must-come-before-net-zero\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Energy Security Must Come Before Net Zero\u2019<\/a>&nbsp;argues&nbsp;that,&nbsp;\u2018we must not let ideology obscure common sense\u2019 as Brent crude oil hits over $100 per barrel, and gas prices double.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As a&nbsp;petrochemical&nbsp;billionaire, Ratcliffe undeniably has a personal stake in the fossil fuel industry.&nbsp;If&nbsp;you\u2019re&nbsp;into football, you might also know his&nbsp;track record&nbsp;of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/football\/2024\/nov\/26\/manchester-united-spent-8m-sacking-staff-in-jim-ratcliffe-cost-cutting-drive\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">slashing&nbsp;hundreds of&nbsp;jobs at Manchester United<\/a>&nbsp;to \u201ccut costs\u201d.&nbsp;Not so keen&nbsp;to defend job security then.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, the energy security argument is spreading beyond&nbsp;fossil fuel lobbyists.&nbsp;Ideas of national strength&nbsp;are&nbsp;fiercely&nbsp;present in&nbsp;our&nbsp;public&nbsp;discourse&nbsp;and&nbsp;this&nbsp;is&nbsp;only&nbsp;being&nbsp;heightened by oil politics.&nbsp;The impact of geopolitics on our cost of living should not be downplayed, but media propaganda makes&nbsp;things worse. For instance,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/news\/politics\/2156854\/fury-ed-milibands-net-zero\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>The&nbsp;Express<\/em><\/a>&nbsp;reported&nbsp;that Ed Miliband\u2019s \u201cnet zero fanaticism\u201d would cost taxpayers over \u00a39 trillion. This&nbsp;claim \u2013 being propagated by rightwing think tanks and Reform UK \u2013&nbsp;both exaggerates the facts and&nbsp;fails to&nbsp;consider<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2026\/mar\/11\/reaching-net-zero-by-2050-cheaper-for-uk-than-one-fossil-fuel-crisis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&nbsp;\u2018the cost of paying for the fossil fuels needed for energy if we do not reach net zero\u2019<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Our recent work on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/jpit.uk\/responding-to-christian-nationalism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Christian nationalism<\/a>&nbsp;is pertinent to the energy security debate, because of the desire for national (oil and gas) independence.&nbsp;Resource extraction is interlinked with&nbsp;the&nbsp;Christian&nbsp;history of colonial capitalism, using theological arguments to&nbsp;justify conquest of a land, its&nbsp;peoples&nbsp;and resources.<sup data-fn=\"76bb5881-77ad-42e5-ba3e-bd577d2792a8\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"https:\/\/jpit.uk\/should-we-still-stop-rosebank#76bb5881-77ad-42e5-ba3e-bd577d2792a8\" id=\"76bb5881-77ad-42e5-ba3e-bd577d2792a8-link\">1<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;Often this&nbsp;draws on the notion of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.methodist.org.uk\/about\/our-stories\/climate-justice-from-subduing-to-tilling-and-keeping\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cdominion\u201d<\/a>, when instead&nbsp;as Christians we&nbsp;must&nbsp;reorient our relationship to creation towards \u201cstewardship\u201d or \u201cloving service\u201d.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stopcambo.org.uk\/updates\/crisis-in-the-middle-east-and-what-it-means-for-rosebank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Our friends at Stop Rosebank<\/a>&nbsp;highlight&nbsp;that dominion over this oil field would have little benefit to our domestic energy security, given that 80% of UK oil is exported.&nbsp;Instead, approving the project&nbsp;will&nbsp;continue to \u2018ti[e] our economy to the geopolitical ripples of war\u2019.&nbsp;Although some are musing over the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/north-sea-oil-is-it-time-to-reconsider-drilling-13520893\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">North Sea\u2019s&nbsp;potential&nbsp;to&nbsp;reduce&nbsp;the environmental impact&nbsp;<\/a>of mass energy imports,&nbsp;fundamentally these \u201cunstable\u201d markets&nbsp;won\u2019t&nbsp;bring us more security&nbsp;in the same way that renewable energy can.&nbsp;A pithy meme from Greenpeace sums it up well.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"819\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/jpit.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/648871350_3779225472214555_1507088237906147430_n-819x1024.jpg\" alt=\"A meme format split into two halves. The bottom half - wind turbines and solar panels, caption 'Energy not stuck in the Strait of Hormuz'.\" class=\"wp-image-25861\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>David Fallon, Greenpeace<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The job security argument&nbsp;<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/climatenetwork.org\/2025\/11\/22\/cop30-takes-a-hopeful-step-towards-justice-but-does-not-go-far-enough\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">As COP30 underlined<\/a>, a&nbsp;\u201cjust transition\u201d&nbsp;is essential to the safe and fair movement from&nbsp;fossil fuels towards more sustainable economic models.&nbsp;This requires protecting the workers within&nbsp;fossil fuel-intensive industry, agriculture, oil and gas, ensuring high quality jobs are created.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Unite\u2019s ongoing campaign, No Ban Without a Plan,&nbsp;stresses&nbsp;this&nbsp;factor in&nbsp;the shift to renewable energy.&nbsp;Amid&nbsp;the Iran war\u2019s&nbsp;escalation,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unitetheunion.org\/news-events\/news\/2026\/march\/unite-government-must-back-north-sea-oil-and-gas-including-rosebank-and-jackdaw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the union\u2019s&nbsp;general&nbsp;secretary&nbsp;recently&nbsp;stated<\/a>&nbsp;that \u201cDomestic gas from Jackdaw and oil from Rosebank are essential for jobs\u201d and that \u201cwe cannot let go of one rope before we have&nbsp;hold of another\u201d.&nbsp;It&nbsp;is vital that we promote&nbsp;a politics&nbsp;of listening to workers who are experiencing this reality and their valid concerns about the potential&nbsp;negatives&nbsp;of this ban.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>However, Stop Rosebank\u2019s campaign&nbsp;website&nbsp;and&nbsp;pledges&nbsp;centre&nbsp;job security.&nbsp;We are encouraging MPs to&nbsp;sign&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.stopcambo.org.uk\/rosebank-mp-actions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the Rosebank pledge<\/a>, which explicitly commits politicians to \u201cadvocate for a properly&nbsp;funded&nbsp;just&nbsp;transition for oil and gas workers and communities\u201d.&nbsp;If we can persuade the Government to stop this&nbsp;oil field, they will need to&nbsp;invest in&nbsp;well paid&nbsp;green jobs and infrastructure in the North Sea&nbsp;that will be more sustainable in the long-term&nbsp;than fossil fuel industry jobs. Delaying the transition&nbsp;won\u2019t&nbsp;fix the current&nbsp;issues,&nbsp;but a new system could.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The role of the Church&nbsp;<\/h2>\n<p>It is easy to separate ourselves from the messiness of international politics.
