{"id":2114,"date":"2025-12-18T08:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-12-18T08:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jpit.uk\/?p=25102"},"modified":"2025-12-18T08:00:00","modified_gmt":"2025-12-18T08:00:00","slug":"after-cop30-balancing-lament-hope","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/standrewsurcrustington.org.uk\/?p=2114","title":{"rendered":"After COP30: Balancing Lament &amp; Hope"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/jpit.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/website-covers-1.png\" class=\"ff-og-image-inserted\"><\/div>\n<p>Watching from afar through&nbsp;headlines and Instagram posts, I was unsure how to feel about&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/jpit.uk\/cop30-belem-brazil-10-21-november-2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">COP30<\/a>&nbsp;last month.&nbsp;As a former youth climate striker, my&nbsp;teenage&nbsp;sense of optimism&nbsp;has been&nbsp;somewhat&nbsp;dampened. The&nbsp;more&nbsp;I learn about politics, negotiation, and multilateral cooperation,&nbsp;the more&nbsp;exasperated I become.&nbsp;It\u2019s&nbsp;easy&nbsp;to be cynical&nbsp;towards COP as a tool for actual global change.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A month on,&nbsp;is it worth talking about an international event&nbsp;for climate&nbsp;littered&nbsp;with&nbsp;fossil fuel&nbsp;lobbyists?&nbsp;Will our national leaders ever advocate for bold action?&nbsp;Haven\u2019t&nbsp;we&nbsp;passed&nbsp;the point of applauding these events?&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Despite some progress, this COP&nbsp;was&nbsp;deeply&nbsp;inadequate,<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>but&nbsp;I think it&nbsp;mattered less in&nbsp;what it&nbsp;achieved&nbsp;than in what it&nbsp;symbolized.&nbsp;Ten&nbsp;years&nbsp;from the Paris Agreement,&nbsp;many&nbsp;are disillusioned and seeking other courses of action. I pray that the&nbsp;shortcomings&nbsp;of this COP will fuel imaginative alternatives to&nbsp;still&nbsp;work towards<a href=\"https:\/\/jpit.uk\/sixhopes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&nbsp;a planet where our environment is renewed.<\/a><em>&nbsp;<\/em>Christians are clearly called into this&nbsp;fight for climate justice, within and beyond formal policymaking structures.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>There&nbsp;were&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/substack.com\/home\/post\/p-179975610?source=queue\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">plenty of articles<\/a>&nbsp;published&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/greencentralbanking.com\/2025\/11\/26\/cop30-deep-division-on-core-issues-but-progress-on-climate-and-adaptation-finance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">covering&nbsp;the positive outcomes<\/a>, such as&nbsp;the Just&nbsp;Transition&nbsp;Action Mechanism, Global Implementation Accelerator, and funds for tropical forests and adaptation finance. But there was an&nbsp;overall&nbsp;sense of&nbsp;disappointment.<sup>1<\/sup>&nbsp;For a conference held within the Amazon rainforest \u2013 an emblem of the destruction we are wreaking on nature, and of the beautiful creation we are called&nbsp;to steward&nbsp;\u2013 many believe the language was not strong enough.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Taking stock of COP now, as we look to a new year in climate campaigning,&nbsp;can&nbsp;both inspire&nbsp;Christian activists and challenge churches to pursue bolder&nbsp;action, when&nbsp;global summits fall short.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fossil Fuels&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One of the most&nbsp;lamentable&nbsp;realities of this COP was the<a href=\"https:\/\/thegoodlobby.eu\/record-high-number-of-fossil-fuel-lobbyists-at-cop30\/#:~:text=A%20flood%20of%20fossil%20fuel,industries%20were%20accredited%20to%20COP30.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&nbsp;record number of fossil fuel lobbyists in attendance<\/a>.&nbsp;Ambitious goals are much harder&nbsp;to achieve&nbsp;with the&nbsp;pressures of these representatives.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Out of 194 representatives, \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-025-03802-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">roughly 80 didn\u2019t submit new commitments for 2035\u2026and the rest submitted weak pledges\u2019<\/a>, leading scientists to project that we are still \u2018on track\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-025-03618-z\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">for upwards of 2.6 \u00b0 C of warming<\/a>\u202fby 2100\u2019.&nbsp;As a young adult activist, this&nbsp;fills me with grief and urgency. The future I fear is already the present for millions of young adults in the Global South, where climate disaster is not a distant threat but a daily reality. The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/dec\/02\/indonesia-floods-one-million-people-evacuated-death-toll-rises\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recent floods in Indonesia<\/a>&nbsp;are just one heartbreaking example among many.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This year,&nbsp;JPIT&nbsp;church&nbsp;leaders have campaigned&nbsp;against the fossil fuel industry&nbsp;through the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/jpit.uk\/issues\/environment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Climate Coalition mass lobby in July<\/a>&nbsp;and the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/jpit.uk\/rosebank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">#StopRosebank<\/a>&nbsp;campaign.&nbsp;Moments like COP should empower us&nbsp;further&nbsp;as Christians to&nbsp;reiterate&nbsp;concerns&nbsp;to our MPs and to push&nbsp;the limits of&nbsp;our&nbsp;local and national&nbsp;strategies.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Global South&nbsp;Representation&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Tensions&nbsp;were high&nbsp;between those in the room and those excluded.&nbsp;On the second day,&nbsp;my&nbsp;social media was dominated by clips of&nbsp;some Munduruku indigenous people&nbsp;storming the&nbsp;conference to break into the decision-making spaces.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/earth.org\/despite-record-turnout-only-14-of-indigenous-brazilians-are-expected-to-access-decision-making-spaces-at-cop30\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Despite&nbsp;the record turnout, the barriers to genuine participation for indigenous peoples became painfully clear<\/a>.&nbsp;Seeing this protest&nbsp;immediately&nbsp;made me lose hope in the event, unable to take it seriously if it&nbsp;wasn\u2019t&nbsp;going to take those with lived experience seriously.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This&nbsp;racial dimension of the environmental crisis&nbsp;is&nbsp;undeniable, and the&nbsp;disparity&nbsp;in Global North\u2013South representation at COP30 makes this clear.&nbsp;Last week, I was privileged to join Methodist&nbsp;representatives at a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.archbishopofyork.org\/speaking-and-writing\/sermons\/archbishop-york-speech-justice-and-peace-palestine-and-israel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UK church leaders and agencies event on Palestine at Lambeth Palace&nbsp;with the Archbishop of York,<\/a>&nbsp;where one speaker&nbsp;argued for&nbsp;the interconnection between genocide and ecocide happening in Palestine and the West Bank.&nbsp;It highlighted how the church\u2019s response to&nbsp;worldwide violence, colonialism, and climate crisis are interconnected.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In the closing plenary,&nbsp;Colombia spoke powerfully against procedural issues&nbsp;including the mitigation work&nbsp;programme and&nbsp;announced an independent roadmap&nbsp;with the Netherlands.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2025\/nov\/24\/cop30-wrecked-fossil-fuels-russia-saudi-arabia-brazil\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Genevieve Guenther<\/a>&nbsp;argues that this action \u2018outside the COP&nbsp;process may&nbsp;establish&nbsp;a trading bloc that could begin to sanction nations \u2013 and banks \u2013 that refuse to wind down fossil fuels\u2019 but requires us to \u2018do our part and subject world leaders to extreme and relentless public pressure\u2019.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchtimes.co.uk\/articles\/2025\/28-november\/news\/world\/christian-observers-at-cop30-call-for-renewed-efforts-after-financial-agreement-blocked\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Patricia Mungcal (National Council of Churches,&nbsp;Philippines)<\/a>&nbsp;described how,&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI find hope outside the negotiation halls,&nbsp;in the courage and bravery of Indigenous peoples to defend their land and care for the creation; in the international solidarity\u2026even outside the official texts.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We must continue the fight for&nbsp;intersectional&nbsp;justice&nbsp;and listen to those with lived experience.&nbsp;It is crucial that the&nbsp;Church&nbsp;pays attention&nbsp;to&nbsp;alternative leaders like Colombia&nbsp;for&nbsp;inspiration and guidance on climate policy, rather than&nbsp;rich countries.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2026so&nbsp;what now?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>COP30 was alleged to be the \u201cimplementation&nbsp;COP\u201d.&nbsp;The name of the final text&nbsp;(<em>mutir\u00e3o<\/em>)&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.carbonbrief.org\/cop30-key-outcomes-agreed-at-the-un-climate-talks-in-belem\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">means \u201ccollective efforts\u201d,<\/a>&nbsp;underscoring the need&nbsp;for mobilisation not only from our&nbsp;politicians&nbsp;and diplomats, but also our wider communities and churches.&nbsp;Regardless of how impressed you are with the&nbsp;outcomes, we as&nbsp;churches&nbsp;and Christians&nbsp;must put our money where our mouth is&nbsp;and&nbsp;boldly campaign&nbsp;for&nbsp;climate action.&nbsp;We must fulfil our Christian call to work for justice for the marginalised, and to care for our God-given creation, by continuing to&nbsp;speak out&nbsp;beyond COP.&nbsp;Proverbs 31: 8-9&nbsp;encourages&nbsp;the church to be bold&nbsp;and&nbsp;courageous:&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Speak out for those who cannot speak,&nbsp;<br \/>\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202ffor the rights of all the destitute.&nbsp;&nbsp;<br \/>Speak out, judge righteously,&nbsp;<br \/>\u202f\u202f\u202f\u202fdefend the rights of the poor and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Proverbs%2031%3A8-9&amp;version=NRSVA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">needy<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>By&nbsp;reflecting on&nbsp;COP from a Christian perspective,&nbsp;we&nbsp;must&nbsp;recognise the need to:&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Use&nbsp;bolder language&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"2\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Listen to our partners in the Global South&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol start=\"3\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Embody one of the alternative pathways to&nbsp;climate justice&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The UK is making wins thanks to campaigners, having&nbsp;recently&nbsp;announced&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.stopcambo.org.uk\/updates\/world-leading-change-in-uk-energy-policy-just-announcement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">an&nbsp;end to new oil and gas&nbsp;exploration<\/a>.&nbsp;This should be celebrated as we approach the end of 2025, but ambitious New Year\u2019s Resolutions for 2026 are necessary.&nbsp;Churches&nbsp;offer a unique platform to engage with climate politics&nbsp;away from formal international diplomacy&nbsp;in local and national communities,&nbsp;where&nbsp;we&nbsp;can&nbsp;lament the destruction that is occurring&nbsp;whilst&nbsp;finding&nbsp;hope in the kingdom of heaven.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Continue to support the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.stopcambo.org.uk\/act\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Stop Rosebank campaign<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Interested in growing a relationship with your MP as part of your church\u2019s work for climate justice?
